Tips to improve your chipping play

Chipping around the green can be simple if a few rules are followed. Firstly, try to chip like you putt, so you need to read the green. Select a club that will give the right of amount of carry and roll. As a simple rule of thumb, a 7 iron gives 25% carry and 75% roll. Although practice will give you figures for how your clubs respond with your swing.

Next the set up has to change slightly so that maximum control is aquired. Hold down towards the bottom of the grip, keep the stance fairly narrow, not too wide, with the left foot pulled back, making sure the hips and shoulders are still parrallel.

When playing the shot, keep the wrists 'quiet' and so only the loft of the club will create the carry of the shot. Going through the ball avoid the temptation to flick, lift or help the ball in the air and keep the hands leading all through the shot.

The ball will pop in the air, land and roll to the hole. Once this shot is learnt, you will have more confidence saving your par.
